Step Up Challenge

  • Start Date: 4th May, 2020 @ 12:00am
  • Closing Date: 12th Jun, 2020 @ 12:00am
  • Location: Virtual event

Step Up and join us on a virtual walk along the World famous Camino de Santiago trail.

Due to the Covid-19 outbreak we have had to cancel our annual walk, which seriously affects our fundraising efforts to help vulnerable young people out of homelessness, but also means hundreds of our supporters are unable to take part in our popular annual walk.

But worry not, we have a new ‘virtual’ challenge where you can walk the length of the Camino de Santiago from the comfort of your own home or during your daily exercise (ensuring social distancing of course!).

The route is a total of 743kms and we’re allowing up to 6 weeks to complete the challenge. You can do this with your friends, family, work colleagues or on your own if you’re ready to walk 965,900 steps, or there about!

It’s £10 per person to register, but as it is a challenge we’re asking you to please try and raise some sponsorship money for our vital work for vulnerable young people at risk of homelessness in the West Midlands. We need your support now more than ever.

To register, simply click the button below. Once you have registered on Eventbrite, you will receive a link to the virtual walk challenge.

Your Virtual Route

Each team will be aiming to walk as many steps as possible during the challenge and to complete your chosen Camino de Santiago walk. The team members will enter their daily steps on to the team dashboard. You can count your steps via a fit bit of other step counters or on a app on your mobile phone. If a team completes the walk before the challenge ends they simply keep on adding their distances to see how far they can walk in total during the challenge. The final challenge leader board will reflect the total distance walked by each team, highest to lowest.

When the challenge begins each team will see an interactive map which displays the virtual route together with an image of and a description of the starting milestone.

Professional photographs and facts about the nearest or latest reached map waypoint / milestone along the virtual route will be displayed to provide additional points of interest and motivation. As distance is added, our built-in challenge and distance achievements will be unlocked for each participant, motivating users to make the most of the challenge and collect all of the unlockable achievements.

Distances logged automatically update the respective team’s progress and position on the interactive map and the team’s progress as a highlighted path / line. The team’s progress will also be displayed as a percentage and graph on the website and mobile apps.

Users will also be able to see their activity history on the website and apps, and can add activity for previous days if they forgot to do so at the time.

Your guide to the Step Up Challenge

Don’t forget you can still exercise once a day at the moment outside your home and you should be staying active as much as you can, while observing social distancing rules of course! If the lockdown does get even stricter, there are still ways you can complete the challenge without ever leaving your home. In fact, we recommend you stay home as much as you can anyway… stay home and stay safe!

Here’s a guide to the Step Up Challenge 🙂

Number of team members How many steps per day each How can you do it?
Just you Woah! That’s 23,000 steps a day! You’ll need a big garden and lots of energy. Remember you need to stay at home as much as possible, so if you live in a mansion or have a treadmill at home then you might make it!
Team of 2 11,500 steps a day. You’ll both need gardens and plenty of space to do exercise videos and laps. Doable if you’ve got the time and space at home.
Team of 3 7,667 steps a day. You’ll need to do plenty of dancing and walking around your home and garden as much as possible. Don’t forget to keep moving while you wash the pots.
Team of 4 5,750 steps a day. Keep moving while you watch the telly, go up and down your stairs as much as you can and never stop moving when you’re cleaning.
Team of 5 4,600 steps a day. Get the hoover out every day, take things upstairs one at a time. Dance around the kitchen and do lots of star jumps every morning to start your day.
