Young people leaving care need somewhere safe and suitable to live to help them make a positive transition into adulthood. Good housing underpins success in other areas of life.
St Basils has worked with Barnardos to produce a new national Care Leavers' Accommodation and Support Framework and toolkit. We have done this as part of our work across England supporting local authorities and their partners in preventing youth homelessness and devising positive pathways for young people, which is funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government .
The toolkit is aimed at local authority commissioners, leaving care managers, Housing Options managers, and providers of accommodation and support. You can use it in many ways including:
To guide you through a needs assessment in your local area.
To help think about strengths and gaps in your services – as well as generate ideas for doing things differently.
Service re-design and commissioning.
The framework pulls together expertise from local authorities, leaving care and housing charities. There are 5 steps to the framework:
• Training young people on tenancies and the housing market
• Involving young people in planning their accommodation
• Reducing housing crisis by having emergency options
• Commissioning a wide range of housing types
• Developing skills and confidence ahead of move to independent living
