On 29th October 10 young people from St Basils got the opportunity to try out professional kitchen facilities and take part in a taster baking class at University College Birmingham (UCB).

They attended the baking workshop led by UCB’s baking lecturers in one of the professional training kitchens at the University. UCB offered the workshop to St Basils young people as part of their support to St Basils with fundraising event St Basils Bake Off.

Splitting into groups the young people were taught how to make Belgian current buns and how to ice them.

One young man, Ricardo, from accommodation scheme Conybere Gardens said “It was great working in a group”.

Afterwards the young people attended the UCB open day for traineeships and apprenticeships.

Another young person, Louise, from emergency accommodation scheme Yardley House said:

“Coming today has given me the motivation to go on and enrol on a course after a really difficult couple of months”
