St Basils Blown Away... By Walkers Support During 2015 Challenge
22 JUN 2015

Volunteer Rebecca prevents Gazebo taking off during a particular Windy St Basils Walk in Staffordshire

A massive thank you to all our supporters who took on the St Basils Walk which this year was around The Roaches near Leek in Staffordshire. 103 teams and almost 600 supporters took part in this sponsored challenge on Saturday 6th June, walking either 13 miles or 26 miles which is no mean feat either way! It was a dry and sunny but windy day, and despite a few of our gazebos at checkpoints taking off and having to change the route to skirt around a couple of fallen trees, volunteers and Walkers alike took this in their stride and on the day we were blown away by the enthusiasm and passion for our cause... rather than anything else!

Here’s some feedback we had following this event:

Team NimmoAlison Nimmo CBE said:

"2015 was my 9th year of doing the St Basil's walk. I started as an excuse to see my sister Jane and to get some fresh air, but it's become a firm fixture. Just a great excuse for a weekend away and the walks are always challenging but in the most sublime locations, with a fabulous and friendly crowd. This year I took my very own team of Londoners, none of whom had walked more than 15 miles and we challenged ourselves to do the 26 miler.  It took us much of the day, but what fun and what a great sense of achievement at the end - pasta and beers all round to celebrate!!! And we raised a lot of money for such a worthwhile cause.  And the next morning all my team were raring to go (even Ros who has just turned 63!!), they've all signed up for next year. Now that's what I call success!"

Natasha Manyuira who was new to the Walk this year took part with team ‘Martinaeu’s the Way’. She said: “I think it’s amazing that there is a charity that supports youngsters through difficulty. I am more than happy to support this cause because I believe that young people deserve the chance to be happy, healthy and fulfilled in their lives. The Walk was scenic and enjoyable. I really like the checkpoints; there was an abundance of water and chocolate bars that really helped sustain me during the thirteen mile walk. I felt extremely proud of myself at the end. I would certainly partake in the annual charity walk again!”

Compass PLC (pictured right) returned this year to the Walk with some new members who hadn’t done it before.  Dominic Blakemore said: “The Walk was great! Well organised and very friendly people! A FAB day! We are hoping to raise £1000 towards the work of St Basils, it’s a valuable cause and it’s important to support all of the community”.

ShoosmithsTeams ‘Chafing the dream’ and ‘Holy Walkamolie’ (pictured left) have shared with us that they have raised £420 at last count and Shoosmiths who they all work for have confirmed they will match fund what they raise which is fantastic!

To date those who took part in St Basils Walk 2015 have so far raised £36,488 with more set to come in. Check out the interactive totaliser on our homepage for the latest total!
