Young people and staff taking part in Sponsored Sky Bike Ride raise over £400

As part of St Basils new programme of youth engagement activities to bring young people from different accommodation projects together, St Basils staff organised a sponsored 14km Bike Ride led by instructors from Sky Ride and using bikes and helmets loaned from Birmingham City Council as part of their ‘Big Birmingham Bikes’ initiative.

Seven young people and 6 staff from across St Basils projects took part. The Ride had the joint aims of improving fitness, wellbeing and social skills whilst raising funds for St Basils.

The ride was a circular route starting and finishing at Edgbaston Reservoir with an ice cream break in Cannon Hill Park. The Sky Ride instructors provided additional safety equipment and ensured the pace was kept to a safe but steady rate.

At the half way stage, one young man commented: “It’s been nice to get back on a bike again. It’s been quite tiring but really good fun”.

Staff sought sponsorship from friends and family for the ride and between them raised over £400.

Youth Engagement Officer Sam Henry said: “We’ve had very positive feedback from the young people about this event. We’d like to thank Birmingham City Council and Sky Ride as without them it couldn’t have happened. We are hopeful that we will be able to grow this event and do something similar on a larger scale next summer.”
