This new service led by St Basils Outreach Navigation workers is called the Young Persons Navigation Service and involves outreach workers going out onto the streets to help guide young people to appropriate support and accommodation. Essentially it is taking what we offer here at St Basils direct to young people on the streets. St Basils Outreach Navigation workers will respond to all young people found to be sleeping rough or at risk of sleeping rough.
This new service is part of the local Rough Sleeping Initiative (see diagram below) and has been commissioned by Birmingham City Council. The team will be working alongside the Street Intervention and Rough Sleeping teams to identify rough sleepers or young people at risk and is also able to take self-referrals from young people or referrals from other outreach teams – just call 07557 744079 (under 25’s only).
This new phone number does not in any way replace our free text service, it is simply a more direct way to contact this particular team who will then come out to the young person. Young people without credit can still text NEED ST BASILS for free to 62277 to access our services and referrals will be made, where appropriate to this new service.
St Basils Outreach Navigation workers will then be able to refer young people to St Basils own services or other appropriate agencies for support and will accompany young people to appointments where required, including ensuring access to benefits and other provisions. They will also work closely with colleagues at St Basils Birmingham Youth Hub to identify suitable accommodation.
This service is only for under 25s. Rough sleepers who are over 25 can self-refer to the local Rough Sleeping Teams led by Midland Heart. They’ll need to call 07483 981 912, any weekday before 11pm. Alternatively concerned members of the public can refer them to Streetlink: https://www.streetlink.org.uk/ and this will then be passed on to the Local Authority Outreach service for the area.
