School Fundraising and Education

Educating children on Homelessness

The effects of the rising costs of living and resulting housing crisis are becoming increasingly evident with many families and children living in temporary accommodation. The need to raise awareness and educate students that are children and young people about current social issues like homelessness has never been more paramount.

Teaching Resources for Schools on Homelessness

School Pack

St Basils has created a free School Pack to help pupils aged 8–11 learn about homelessness in an age-appropriate, sensitive way.

With many families in temporary accommodation, it’s a great resource to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and support wellbeing.

How Schools can Help

Fundraising: An educational approach to fundraising for schools

Have your students been inspired by their learning on homelessness? Why not bring your school community together and give your pupils the opportunity to make a difference in their wider community by taking part in a fundraising event or exercise? There’s a few simple ideas below you could get involved with as a school, or remember, we always welcome donations of longlife food and toiletry items from our wishlist.

World Homeless day – 10th October

The perfect opportunity to raise awareness around the rising social issue of homelessness amongst your pupils. Why not host a charity day for St Basils and support it with some learning about homelessness using our fantastic lesson plans and resources? Local schools have recently taken part in our “Wear it Red for World Homelessness Day” campaign, with students donating £1 to come to school dressed in St Basils red. Already have a red uniform? No problem- check out our ideas below for fantastic fundraisers:

Fundraising Activities for Primary and Secondary Schools

Sleepout or Sleep from school

Join our annual Big Sleepout at Millennium Point with other local schools, or we can support you to host your own Sleepout in a school field, playground, classroom, or school hall.

Wear it Red

Wear it Red for St Basils- each student and staff member can wear red to school for a suggested donation of £1, raising vital funds and using our free homelessness resources to educate on the day.

Break the Rules Day

Sometimes it's nice to break the rules- your school might already wear red, so swap it out with odd socks or shoes day, teachers can dress up as students, or some students have even wore their school unforms completely backwards- minus the shoes...

Ditch the Uniform Day

The classic non-unform day gives kids the chance to show their creativity and unique style. With a suggested donation of £1, funds will help prevent homelessness in their peers.

Build a Shelter Competition

At our annual Big Sleepout, hundreds join the Creative Cardboard Competition—building shelters from cardboard to pass the time in the cold. Try it at school: have students consider what resources they’d need to build a shelter and where they’d find them.

Donation Drive

Langley School got together to donate this huge haul of necessities for our young people, including drinks, long-life food, toiletries, socks, kitchen items and games. Why not get in touch to ask for your local project to donate directly? See your impact in person and meet your local project leader.

Duke of Edinburgh

In Secondary School and taking on the Duke of Edinburgh Award? Complete your volunteering section by organising a fundraising event or activity in support of St Basils- the sky is the limit!

Movie Night

Take votes on age-appropriate movies to watch at a school movie night. Charge for tickets and popcorn, helping us to help young people. Plus points if you can find a movie about homelessness.

Talent Show / Performance

Everyone loves a talent show! Hold a talent show in aid of St Basils and create great memories for parents and family. Suggest a small donation to attend and remember- we would be honoured to attend and speak as a guest.
