Homelessness Should Not Be Part of Growing Up!

Our response to latest rough sleeping stats.

At St Basils, we want young people to feel cared about, to have trusted support, somewhere safe, suitable and affordable to live that enables them to learn and work.  We do not want young people sleeping on our streets.

That’s why we’re working closely with Birmingham City Council and other partners to prevent young people having to sleep rough and reaching out to those who, for whatever reason, do find themselves on the streets.

The Youth Hub on Heath Mill Lane, Digbeth provides a one stop service for any 16-25 year old who is homeless or at risk of being homeless. If you are worried about a young person, you or the young person can contact us by texting NEEDSTBASILS to 62277 or by calling 0300 30 30 099.  You can also get in touch through our website or through facebook.  Just search St Basils charity.

We also have dedicated outreach workers who will go to a young person wherever they are on the streets, and do whatever it takes to ensure they have a safe place to stay and the support they need.

We know young people may be afraid and anxious about what help we can give. They may well have been let down before and find it hard to trust again. Let me assure you that we will involve the young person in every decision about them and make sure that they feel safe and supported with any offer we make.

However if we’re really serious about ending rough sleeping, then we need a national commitment to increase our supply of truly affordable housing, we need to re-align housing benefits with housing costs and we need timely access to health and wellbeing support, before people reach crisis.”
