Young person Krystal achieves great success with distance learning

A BIG shout out to one of our young people – Krystal – who has done fantastically well with her distance learning courses at St Basils, completing a Level 3 National Diploma in IT, as well as Life Skills and Employability qualifications.

Due to Coronavirus, our employability courses which we would normally run with groups of young people at our projects, had to  adapt and move online. It is wonderful that employability coach Jade and Krystal were able to build and maintain a relationship, despite at that time, not being able to meet up face to face, proving that with dedication and the right support, distance learning can work during this strange time.

Jade had this message for Krystal;

“It’s been an absolute pleasure working with you. You are a superstar !!!”

In her own words, here is Krystal’s experience of Distance Learning:

“Hi, my name is Krystal, I have a speech and hearing impairment. Since coming to St Basils in March 2020, I feel I have achieved so much. I have just finished my Level 3 National Diploma in IT.

I have been supported by my Progression Coach Angela Grant and I have completed three life skills modules. Angela told me about Distance Learning and gaining more qualifications to prepare me for when I am ready to work.

I was happy to be referred as I wanted to gain more qualifications. I was contacted by Jade from the Employability team, who explained what Distance Learning was and what was involved and that I could gain two qualifications, Level 1 and Level 2 in Employability and Development Skills.

Myself and Jade worked from a distance through WhatsApp, email and phone. I found the experience of distance learning was really good because Jade was able to send me work via email and if I needed any support, I would message Jade and she would call me, WhatsApp or email.

Lifeskills and Distance Learning has really changed my Employability expectations and has helped me gain more skills, confidence and I believe this will benefit other young people as it has done for me.”
