Just Over 8 Weeks To Go...

Hi {FIRST NAME},

Welcome to the first Big Sleepout countdown mailer!

Whether this is your first time taking part in the Big Sleepout, or you’re back for another year, we’re excited to bring you a bigger and better Sleepout than ever before with our new venue and partners.

Over the next 8 weeks, our dedicated schools lead, Esther will be on hand to answer any questions and provide support to your group with handy updates, tips and encouragement to help you and your learners prepare for the challenge ahead.

Remember, the Big Sleepout isn’t just about sleeping under the stars – it’s an opportunity for you to make a real impact by standing with us in our mission to end youth homelessness.

A quick reminder of what we do…

St Basils works with young people aged 16–25 across the West Mids who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. We provide safe and secure accommodation, support their mental and physical wellbeing and help them access education, training and employment so they can move towards a brighter future.

At St Basils, we often use something called The Table Analogy. It’s a really simple, powerful way of showing how a young person’s support system – their home, their family, their work/education and their health – can start to collapse without warning.

We’d love you to take a couple of minutes to watch this short video, and share it with your students to demonstrate how homelessness can affect anyone.

🎥 Watch: The Table Analogy

You may never face the kind of challenges described here – but by taking part in the Big Sleepout, you’re showing your support to those who do.

St Basil’s Top Tip

Each week, we will share a top tip which will help boost your fundraising efforts.

This week, we’re asking you to take the first steps in setting up your fundraising page:

Just Over 7 Weeks To Go...

Hi {FIRST NAME},
Welome Back to the Big Sleepout Countdown Mailer!
This week’s mailer is to help you get started with your fundraising challenge. Whilst this might seem a daunting task at first, we will be giving you some tips and ideas to help you reach and exceed your fundraising target! This year we will be awarding the top fundraising U18’s group with a trophy for you to proudly display in your building.
The £16 Ask

St Basils is currently facing a £16 shortfall per young person, per night, and we support over 1,000 young people with accommodation services every year. For Schools & Youth Groups, entry remains free, but we ask each group to raise £960 to cover 2 months worth of accommodation.

Tragically, youth homelessness remains a growing issue, with one young person (16-25 years old) facing homelessness every 4 minutes* across the UK. With support from events like this, we are able to give young people a safe place to stay, and help them to get back up on their feet.

St Basils Top Tip
Why not get ahead with your fundraising by planning in a wider school fundraising day ahead of the Sleepout?
World Homeless Day is coming up on 10th October, so you could pick a suitable day near to this for your in-school fundraiser! A great opportunity to help raise awareness of youth homelessness whilst raising some funds towards your goal.

Just Over 6 Weeks To Go...

Hi {FIRST NAME},
Welcome back to the Big Sleepout countdown!
Although the Big Sleepout is a lot of fun, it’s also an opportunity for students to engage in the topic of youth homelessness. To help your students understand why they are braving the cold and the importance of preventing youth homelessness, we’ve put together a Myth Busting Quiz.
The quiz is 10 simple true or false questions, designed to get your students thinking about the perception of homelessness versus the reality. The quiz works as a homework task, a quick game at form time or as part of a PSHE lesson.
St Basils Top Tip
Outside of the classroom, here are a few ways that you can get your learners and the wider community around your school engaged with the BSO:
  • Share your school’s participation on your social channels. Here is some example text you can share along with your fundraising page link:

“Our School is taking part in the Big Sleepout for St Basils on Friday 13th November, sleeping outside for a night in the Alexander Stadium so a young person won’t have to.  We are taking part in hopes of raising £960+, which will house a young person at risk of rough sleeping for 2 whole months. Please click the link below to donate, and help us support St Basils in preventing youth homelessness”

  • Book in for a visit from Esther! This could be an assembly or just to talk to the students who are taking part in the sleepout; email: esther.pallett@stbasils.org with your preferred time/date:

Available slots: 20th-22nd October or 3-6th November

If you missed out previous mailers, you can view them here: https://stbasils.org.uk/big-sleepout-schools-mailers/

Thank you again for sleeping outside so that a young person doesn’t have to.

Just Over 5 Weeks To Go...

Hi {FIRST NAME},

Can you believe there are just over 5 weeks to go until the big day?!

Today, we will be going over refreshments on the night, what can (and can’t) be brought along, and how to prepare for the Creative Cardboard Competiton…

Food and Refreshments on the Night
Those who have attended a Big Sleepout previously will have experienced the incredible food our friends at Langar Aid provide on the night. Langar provide food for the homeless and vulnerable from their site in Coventry and are returning this year to dish up a warming meal of curry, rice and samosas – we’re so grateful for their continued support and delicious meals!
We will also be providing complementary hot and cold drink throughout the event, with non-dairy milk options available.
Please note that the meal provided by Langar Aid is suitable for vegan diets, however we are unable to offer alternative options or cater for individual dietary requirements, allergies and intolerances. Our advice to individuals who have other requirements, such as allergies, is to bring along your own food.
Introducing, the Sleepout Tuck Shop
This year we’re opening our own Tuck Shop for one-night only which will have various snacks and drinks available for purchase by cash or card!
Breakfast
We’ve got another partner returning to dish up a well-deserved breakfast, the Rapid Relief Team are joining us for another year to provide classic breakfast sandwiches with options including bacon, sausage (vegetarian and vegan options available). The Rapid Relief Team are a global charity who deliver help and hope to people in need, and they’ll be set up at the event exit so you can grab breakfast as you leave.

Creative Cardboard Competition

What started as a bit of fun is now an iconic part of the Sleepout experience, competition is always tough, so we recommend you start thinking now… Everyone is given their own cardboard box on arrival (and a plastic sheet if it’s wet), participants are welcome to go it alone or join forces as a team. You are more than welcome to bring additional materials such as extra cardboard, tape, pens and fairy lights (battery powered).
If you’re in need of inspiration, previous entries include castles, fortresses (including a very impressive functional drawbridge), the Basils Express and a Mystery Machine! Check out some photos here.
Guidance on bringing in items
Participants are more than welcome to bring snacks and drinks; however, alcohol and illegal substances are strictly prohibited and will be confiscated and reported if appropriate during bag inspections.
We take safety very seriously so, whilst those attending are welcome to bring additional materials to build your Cardboard Masterpiece (and hopefully be crowned 2026 champion), scissors are not permitted on site and will be confiscated.

Just Over 4 Weeks To Go...

Hi {FIRST NAME},

Big Sleepout 2026 is just over a month away. This week, we’re spotlighting our radio partner—and sharing why St Basils’ work, and your fundraising, matter so much.

Meet our Big Sleepout 2026 radio partner: Sparkflame Radio

Sparkflame Radio will broadcast a live Big Sleepout Show during the evening. Taking part? Send in a song request to hear in the stadium. Friends and family can also send messages of encouragement and support to the participants. Want to get involved? Send your requests here…

Why your fundraising matters

St Basils supports young people aged 16–25 in the West Midlands who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Centrepoint research found that

* 123, 934 young people were homeless or at risk in the UK during 2024-25, with 12,899 of those being here in the West Midlands region. 7,316 young people were homeless in the West Midlands in 2024/2025.

*Across the UK, one young person becomes homeless every four minutes.

£16 can fund one night of St Basils supported accommodation for a young person. Every £16 you raise can make a real difference.

St Basils’ impact in 2025–2026:

    • 3,935 young people received advice and support.
    • 1,638 young people were supported by us during the year.
    • 1,059 young people lived in our 40+ accommodation schemes.
    • Up to 598 young people lived with us at any one time.
    • 91% of young people moved on from St Basils in a planned, positive way.

This impact is only possible because people like you take part, fundraise and help change young lives.

Half-term fundraising challenge

Use the school holidays to set your team a simple challenge: how many £16 nights of accommodation can you fund over half term? Could everyone raise enough to fund one night of accommodation for a young person?

Young people could try one of these easy fundraising ideas at home:

  • Charity trick-or-treat: collect donations for St Basils instead of sweets.
  • Make and sell: bake cakes, make friendship bracelets, pot plants, or sell pre-loved books or toys to your friends, family and neighbours
  •  Quiz: organise a fun charity quiz with your friends and family on topics of your interest…you could set one up on …..and ask for a donation to join 😊

Final reminders:

  • Visit from St Basils: This is your last chance to book a visit from Esther. If you’re interested in arranging a visit whether this is to present an assembly in your school or talk to your group about the work St Basils does, please contact us before Friday 23rd October to get booked in.

  • Risk assessment: Your safety and security is our number 1 priority, so please download a copy of our risk assessment for your records here.
