SUPPORTED Accommodation

St Basils Bromsgrove scheme provides accommodation with 24 hour on-site support to 15 young men and women aged 16-23 who have a local connection. The accommodation provided comprises of a mixture of studio and one bedroom flats and also has a training kitchen, communal spaces and an ICT room.

The Bromsgrove scheme was purpose built by WM Housing with funding from HCA. St Basils won the contract to run the project in 2009 and the scheme was built in 2010. The scheme was opened to young people in February 2011 and officially opened by the Deputy Civic Head of Bromsgrove District council Cllr Janice Boswell on 27th September 2011

Learning, Skills and Work

The majority of the young people we work with are under the age of 21 or extremely vulnerable. We teach young residents life skills such as cooking and budgeting so that when they move on they will be able to live independently and have the confidence to make a success of their lives.

Once young people are stable we support them to do job searches, update their CVs and help them access placement or volunteering opportunities in the local area. If you can help provide a paid or unpaid placement to a local young person please get in touch.

Talent Match

The Shaw Trust (now Star Skills)  were awarded £1.5m of Big Lottery funding over five years to intensively support young people into work in Worcestershire. They chose St Basils as one of its partners to deliver this in Bromsgrove. This local funding grant is part of a national scheme entitled ‘Talent Match,’ a £108million investment aimed at tackling youth unemployment in 21 areas of England hardest hit by the economic downturn.

It supports young people aged 18- 24 who have been NEET for 12 months and who are furthest away from being “work-ready” to secure employment or take up enterprising opportunities.

In Bromsgrove, a St Basils worker has been employed to identify NEET young people who are looking to launch a long term career but so far have not been successful in their attempts to get a foot on the ladder. The worker encourages local businesses to offer placements and then works intensively with each young person both before and during the placement, delivering a key outcome for young people, some of whom in the current economic climate are being overlooked for long term job opportunities because of their limited experience.

One young resident recently commented: "I really like living here; it's great to have that community feel, that there's activities I can go and join in with and staff on hand to help if i need it but I've got my own space as well. This scheme has turned a negative situation into a positive one for me; I'm training to be a youth worker myself now and it's the help and support I've had here that has inspired me to do that".
