Inclusion Health: Spotlight on Homelessness

Introduction

This event was held as part of the learning and evaluation dissemination of a large-scale programme overseen by the West Midlands Combined Authority Homelessness Taskforce.

This programme sought to create and test out new ways of delivering direct and indirect psychological interventions to staff in homelessness organisations and their clients across four years from June 2020 until July 2024. The “RSI PIE Plus programme”, has reached approximately 400 staff who have provided support to 1265 rough sleeping individuals (2023/24) and 531 individuals with the region’s earlier Housing First initiative (a program supporting rough sleepers and those at risk of homelessness).

Event Purpose

To share outcomes from the WMCA RSI PIE Plus programme, incorporating the following themes:

  • The benefits to homeless clients and staff of a consistent, coherent psychologically informed framework
  • Upskilling homelessness professionals and harnessing their skills
  • Improving the resilience and wellbeing of homelessness support staff
  • Cost effective and strategic use of the expertise of a part-time clinical psychologist to impact over 400 staff and over 1700 clients (2023/24).

How was this achieved?

The audience were invited to a series of oral presentations, poster presentations, case studies, and reflections from RSI managers and frontline staff. See Summary and contributors for more…

Legacy

The audience were made up of senior leaders and frontline staff from a broad range of roles including, a cabinet member, a Birmingham City Council commissioning manager, an ICB representative, a Trauma Informed Coalition lead, a local government member, among others from across the spectrum of healthcare, charity and housing sectors.

They were invited to consider how a broader application of a PIE framework across partnership agencies could play a significant role in designing out homelessness. Everyone was asked to write a commitment on a leaf, describing their part to play in developing this strategy through commissioning, organisational, team and/or individual efforts. To see a selection of the commitments made and if you were not able to join us on the day, join forces with your colleagues by making your commitment here…

The West Midlands Combined Authority

This programme was commissioned by the WMCA Homelessness Taskforce as part of funding from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government’s (MHCLG) RSI Fund for the regional reduction in rough sleeping. WMCA collaborated closely with the St Basils PIE team on the development of PIE Plus activities over the past four years, including contributing to evaluation and learning.

Wider Contributions

Additionally, it would not have been possible without the valuable contributions of many individuals from Housing First and RSI organisations. Contributions of feedback, collaboration throughout the project, poster/case study contributions and being involved on the day of the event have all been invaluable and have been immensely valued and appreciated.

As part of our event, we showed NHS LESS – A film of personal stories and journeys to health from people who have experienced and overcome homelessness. You can view the video and read more here or watch below.

Feedback

Below are a selection of quotes we received about the day in the feedback :

“Caveat to understand more about the embedded psychologist model and how they were able to support both clients and staff in a 3-way meeting”

“Inclusive, informative, felt like a critical time to have such an event”

“Really liked the format of the session and the amount of different perspectives that were captured in such a short space of time. Really inspiring”

“Learning about the work that has been delivered and the impact it has had. Interesting to know what will be next and how organisations can work together”

“I really enjoyed hearing from other organisations and knowing public health were in attendance to see/hear all the good work that is happening”

As a concluding interactive exercise, we asked attendees to fill out a commitment based on what they had taken away from the event towards homelessness.

These were written on paper leaves and then gathered and hung on branches of small trees on each table of guests.

The leaves we collected varied from strategic commissioning level commitments, to organisation and team commitments and further some personal level commitments, a selection of which are displayed below (click to expand).
