Live and Work scheme

Private rent prices are continuously rising which ultimately leads to young people finding it extremely hard to become independent. That’s where our ‘Live and Work’ scheme comes in.

Here’s Jean to explain more:

The scheme provides accommodation for young workers for under £43 per week inclusive of all bills. This scheme is open to 16 and 24 year olds in the West Midlands who are employed –  and is particularly ideal for apprentices and those on a low income.

The scheme is totally Benefit Free which means that young people get the opportunity to Live and to Work without having to rely on welfare benefits.

The accommodation, home to 32 young people, comprised of 8 flats. Each flat has 4 bedrooms, with shared kitchen, dining and bathroom facilities. Its location is only 20 minutes away from Birmingham City Centre with reliable transport links and good local amenities.

The onsite progression coaches offer a bespoke service to the young people living here from Monday to Friday as well as an additional on call service , should a young person need out of hours support.

Since our opening in 2015, this scheme has won numerous awards, including two for NHS partnership work and one for ‘Excellence in Education’, as well as the 2018 National Housing Award for ‘Outstanding Contribution to tackling Homelessness’  and National Housing Award in 2020 for ‘Homelessness Partnership of the Year’. We are currently working to secure funds to develop phase 2, creating a Young Workers’ Village.

Case Studies and EvaluationSt Basils NHS Live and Work apprentice Christopher

“This scheme has helped me massively…without it I would not be in the position I am today”

NHS Apprentice Christopher came to St Basils ‘homeless, shy and worried’. Here he tells his story and how his time at St Basils and specifically the invaluable experience he gained through the Live and Work scheme transformed him into a ‘confident and happy’ young man, saving for a place of his own.
